Month 11= Under Budget. This month we adjusted our budget and made it much lower than normal to reflect our low cost of living as the intern group leaders (and to manage our extra time on the road). We still managed to achieve this budget by cooking some of our own meals and eating the very cheap Peruvian market foods! It might have been tough on our stomachs at times but well worth experiencing the local cuisine.
Because we were below budget in Peru we were able to go to Colombia and splurge a little by hiking to the Lost City with Marissa’s good friends, and fly to the island of San Andres to dive.

We couldn’t find rental sleeping bags for the Pinnacles overnight hike but decided to do it anyway and froze our butts off! Was a cold night but worth it!
2. Night bus (Cambodia)
Nobody in Asia is over 6 feet tall so getting any sleep at all was out of the question in our small ‘sleeper’. Would also help if they paved the main road between their 2 biggest cities….
3. Cows crossing street (Ring of Kerry, Ireland)
This sounds uneventful but actually was quite the ordeal. The cows had escaped their owners who were trying like heck to get them back in the truck. Meanwhile we were on the most narrow road in the country backed up several cars deep in the POURING Irish rain. 45 mins later we were on our way again. Only in Ireland!
4. Nearly hitting another motorcyclist head-on (Thailand mountains)
This one was scary because we were driving on the left side of the road in the mountains. As we came over the bend in a little motor scooter, we narrowly avoided hitting a very tired (and maybe drunk) Frenchman who was driving on the wrong side of the road. He crashed pretty good and will have some scars as a result of his carelessness. Thank gosh none of us were really hurt.
5. Our “other” guest (Bega, Australia)
While doing a workaway in Bega we stayed in a nice little shack at the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately we weren’t the only ones staying there as we had a bat that would make his nightly appearance and swoop down at our reading headlamps.
6. Experiencing hurricane force winds firsthand (Ring Road, Iceland)
Winds were so strong that our hotel wouldn’t let us leave until afternoon. Once on the road we attempted to sightsee anyway, which was quite the dangerous experience!
7. Witnessing cockfights (Ubud, Bali)
Cockfighting is illegal in Bali however during festivals this still happens. One of the crazier events that we experienced as the cockfighting was happening right next to our school that we were teaching at and in the temple of all places!
8. 21 people crammed into minivan (Bolivia)
On our way to the markets we were crammed into a van smaller than a Ford Aerostar. No seatbelts, just crying babies, foul smells and coca chewin’. There were too many elbows to take a picture of this, but we’ll remember it forever.
9. Crazy storm, nobody at hotel, Marissa deathly sick (Sihanoukville, Cambodia)
Marissa was on the verge of hurling (food poisoning battle again) meanwhile it was midnight after a long week of teaching and a 5 hour bus ride. The heavens OPENED up and we were in the back of a tuk-tuk. The hotel that we had reserved was empty and had nobody there meanwhile our tuk-tuk driver tried desperately to find us a room somewhere…..anywhere so Marissa could properly get sick.
10. Kid jumped out of bus luggage hold (Paris, France)
Paris isn’t all fancy and posh. Just ask the 16 year old kid that came charging out of the luggage hold in the bottom of the bus that took us from the airport to Paris. Watch out when you open those luggage holds! (No pic- he was too fast)
11. Parade and fireworks at 3 am (Pisaq, Peru)
Peru LOVES fireworks including at all hours of the night and for no apparent reason. Why not accompany the fireworks with a parade through the streets of the small town of Pisaq at 3 am during the week?
