T-Minus 3 days until we depart from the beloved land of California!
Before we know it we will be off to the races on our roadtrip back to Michigan. We will see our friends and family one last time, then head to London on a one way ticket.
It is really hard to believe that the time is almost here, although if the amount of stuff we have left in our apartment is any indication then we might as well be already gone. We are down to the nitty gritty now.
As I sit here typing I am comfortably leaning back on my only piece of furniture left- my trusty camping chair. My dinner table? The camping cooler. And our bed? The good ol’ air mattress. We’re camping in our apartment this week (minus the s’mores) and it feels great, because it means the trip is coming soon!
The last few weeks we have become dealers on Craigslist in our spare time, selling nearly everything we own. At first it felt weird selling things we actually like but it quickly became exciting! Our couch was super cozy, but was it really worth shipping all the way back to Michigan only to have to find a place to store it for a year? Nope. What about the Lazy Boy Chair and TV? Nope! Selling our stuff to genuine buyers and lightening the load for our small cube of 6x7x8 became somewhat of a mission for both of us. And mission has been accomplished. Everything we wanted to keep made it into the cube and everything else is in a happy new home.
It’s weird being able to fit everything you own into such a small space, but It feels so nice to get rid of the extra things you never use, and to organize yourself. To keep only what is needed and what’s most valuable. Taking a step back and deciding, what is most important to you? For us, it is people, love and memories. Most of that you can’t box up.
Packing up our life has us prep for the lifestyle of the trip too. We are going super minimalist with our backpacks, so on the road we will be living off the same concept we had packing: bare essentials ONLY.
Focus on what’s most important. It is so easy to want to throw extra stuff in our packs that might be useful. We ‘might’ need a thousand different things on the road. But what do we really need to live for the next year? Not as much as you would think. And removing clutter and focusing on the adventure will be part of the adventure.
Liberating.
That is just about the only word that describes the feelings running through me right now. Cleaning out the clutter. Keeping only what’s necessary. Experiences over material possessions. We will just have our packs, our excitement and each other. That’s the ultimate combination.
